Heartstopper and Heartbreak High Open Eyes to Asexuality

Two Netflix series feature asexual characters in thoughtful ways. Heartstopper and Heartbreak High help bring an underrepresented topic into the spotlight.

Today marks International Asexuality Day. It's a good moment to reflect on two Netflix series that address this topic thoughtfully: Heartstopper and Heartbreak High. Both shows present asexual characters naturally and with nuance. That deserves recognition.

In Heartstopper, an asexual character plays an important role in the story. The series shows you can have romantic feelings without sexual attraction. It sounds theoretical perhaps, but the show makes it relatable and normal. Heartbreak High does something similar, exploring another perspective on the asexual spectrum. Both series demonstrate: asexuality is as valid as any other orientation.

What makes these series so valuable is their approach. They don't feel like heavy lessons. Characters aren't defined by asexuality, but it's part of their story. Young people may see themselves represented on screen for the first time. That can mean a lot to someone who feels different from their peers.

Asexuality remains underrepresented in film and television. Many people don't even know what it is. These Netflix productions help change that. They do it without preaching, simply by telling good stories with depth. That's exactly how representation should work.
