Democratic Victory in Nebraska Could Impact LGBT+ Rights
A Democratic win in Nebraska could paradoxically help Republicans expand their power and restrict LGBT+ rights.
A crucial congressional election in Nebraska takes centre stage next week. It concerns the district around Omaha. A Democratic victory affects more than House of Representatives control. It could also impact LGBT+ rights in the state.
Nebraska is one of two US states dividing electoral votes by district. This allowed Democrats in Omaha to secure one electoral vote in 2020 and 2024. They call it the 'blue spot' in an otherwise red state. A Democrat winning the House seat could change this.
The problem involves candidate John Cavanaugh. He currently serves in the state senate. If he wins the House seat, he must resign. Governor Jim Pillen can then appoint a successor. Pillen is Republican and could appoint another Republican until 2028. This would help Republicans strengthen their state senate majority.
That majority matters significantly. Republicans could more easily pass laws restricting LGBT+ rights. This is what LGBT+ advocates fear. Multiple candidates compete in the Democratic primary. They include businesswoman Denise Powell and Crystal Rhoades, Douglas County court clerk. The race attracts considerable attention and donor funding.
