Grenell seeks Russian ambassador role despite LGBTQ rights concerns
Richard Grenell may want to become US ambassador to Russia. This raises questions about Russia's strict anti-LGBTQ laws.
Richard Grenell, former US special envoy, reportedly wants to become US ambassador to Russia. The Washington Blade reported this based on sources. His appointment could face opposition over Russia's controversial policies towards gay and lesbian people.
Grenell was previously known as an advocate for gay rights. He was one of few openly gay figures in government. As ambassador to Germany and special envoy for North Korea, critics say he did not emphasise LGBTQ+ issues. His interest in the Russia post may therefore surprise many.
Russia faces international pressure over its strict laws against gay people. The country banned so-called propaganda around same-sex relationships. Human rights organisations regularly document discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ people there. US senators must approve any ambassador appointment.
It remains unclear if Grenell has been officially nominated. His spokesperson did not respond to questions about this. If appointed, the issue will certainly be raised during Senate hearings.
