Many young LGBTQI+ people feel unseen in society

A COC study shows many young people from the LGBTQI+ community feel insufficiently visible in society. This lack of representation in media, education and public life causes mental health problems.

Many young LGBTQI+ people still struggle to be themselves. This emerges from research by advocacy organisation COC. They feel underrepresented in media, education and public life.

Problems start early. Schools rarely address different sexual orientations and gender identities. This makes many young people feel isolated and hide their true selves. On television, films and advertisements, LGBTQI+ youth see themselves far less than their heterosexual and cisgender peers.

According to COC, this lack of visibility causes mental health problems. Young people experience more stress, anxiety and depression. They struggle to express their identity without negative reactions. Many LGBTQI+ youth also lack role models who share their experiences.

COC calls on schools, media and businesses to give this issue more attention. It's not just about recognising LGBTQI+ youth. It's about making them feel like full members of society. Greater visibility could significantly improve their wellbeing and future.
