17 May 2026 marks another IDAHOBIT celebration. The acronym stands for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia. Many German cities participate in this important day.

Over 50 German cities have planned special events. People gather to show that queerphobia is unacceptable. They advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and visibility.

Various event formats are being organised across the country. Some cities host public demonstrations. Speakers share their experiences and fight for equal rights there.

Other cities organise Rainbow Flashmobs. Participants suddenly gather in public spaces together. They wear rainbow colours to show community strength and solidarity.

Friendly picnics are also planned in several locations. These welcome everyone who wants to participate. People can meet in a safe environment. Building community and friendships remains a core aim.

IDAHOBIT is celebrated annually on 17 May worldwide. This date was carefully chosen for good reason. On 17 May 1990, the World Health Organisation removed homosexuality from its disease list. This represented crucial progress for LGBTQ+ people globally.

Germany has recently focused more on queer rights. Yet many LGBTQ+ individuals still face discrimination and violence. IDAHOBIT events are therefore more than celebrations. They represent powerful political statements too.

Organisations and activists encourage everyone to participate. Both LGBTQ+ people and allies are warmly welcome. Equal rights matter for all of us. Together, people stand stronger against queerphobia.

Find information about local events through community organisations. Detailed programmes will be announced closer to the date.
